Russia has banned George Clooney’s foundation, the Clooney Foundation for Justice (CFJ), from operating within the country, accusing the star and his wife of discrediting Russia on a large scale. The Russian Prosecutor General’s Office stated that the activities of the CFJ have been deemed undesirable in Russia. The foundation, founded in 2016 by George and Amal Clooney, actively investigates war crimes in Ukraine and aims to bring justice to survivors of these crimes. Since the invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022, the CFJ has been gathering evidence of war crimes committed by Russia within Ukraine.

The Prosecutor General’s Office of Russia accused the CFJ of conducting work on a “Hollywood scale” aimed at discrediting Russia. The organization is said to support false patriots, members of banned extremist groups, and terrorists who have fled the country. It was also accused of promoting initiatives for the criminal prosecution of Russia’s top leadership and spreading negative assessments of Russian legislation on foreign agents and NGOs. The ban on the CFJ falls under Russia’s “undesirables” law, which was passed in 2015 and allows the authorities to ban foreign organizations deemed to pose a threat to the country’s constitutional order, defense capabilities, or state security.

The CFJ’s ban by Russia adds it to a list of over 140 organizations deemed undesirable, essentially ending their existence within the country. Organizations branded with this label must cease their work in Russia or face heavy fines and possible criminal repercussions. Russian citizens who cooperate with these organizations or provide them with financial support can also face penalties, including up to five years in prison. The CFJ’s ban is part of a broader trend in Russia of cracking down on human and civil rights organizations, with critics highlighting the broad and vague criteria of the law, allowing for significant discretion in its application.

The CFJ has been actively working to bring justice to survivors of war crimes and crimes against humanity, particularly those committed within Ukraine. The organization has been gathering evidence of these crimes and aims to trigger criminal prosecutions to hold those responsible accountable. The ban on the CFJ by Russia will impact its ongoing operations, raising questions about how the organization will proceed in light of this development. The CFJ’s work with victims of war crimes and its efforts to promote justice and accountability have been a central focus of its mission, and the ban imposed by Russia presents a significant obstacle to these efforts.

The ban on the Clooney Foundation for Justice by Russia has sparked controversy and raised concerns about the limitations of freedom of expression and human rights within the country. Critics argue that the ban is part of a larger pattern of suppression of dissent and crackdown on civil society organizations that aims to hold those in power accountable. The CFJ’s advocacy for justice and accountability in the face of war crimes and crimes against humanity is seen as a threat to the Russian government, leading to its designation as an “undesirable” organization. The ban highlights the challenges facing organizations working to promote human rights and justice in restrictive environments, where their activities are perceived as a threat to the status quo.
