Roger Corman, known as the “King of the Bs,” has passed away at the age of 98. Throughout his career starting in 1955, Corman produced and directed hundreds of films, including classics like “Little Shop of Horrors” and “Attack of the Crab Monsters.” He was known for giving early breaks to many Hollywood actors and directors, such as Francis Ford Coppola, Ron Howard, James Cameron, and Martin Scorsese. In 2009, he received an honorary Academy Award for his contributions to film.

Corman’s films were made on low budgets, allowing for experimentation and creativity. Many of Hollywood’s successful filmmakers got their start working for Corman. Actors like Jack Nicholson, Robert De Niro, Bruce Dern, Ellen Burstyn, and Peter Fonda launched their careers in Corman’s movies. Corman was known for working quickly, often completing films in just a few days. Over time, his movies attracted a wider audience and reflected the changing societal attitudes towards sex and drugs.

In addition to his work in low-budget cinema, Corman also released foreign films in the United States, including works by filmmakers like Ingmar Bergman and Federico Fellini. Despite his reputation for being thrifty, Corman maintained good relationships with his directors and actors. Many of them later cast him in their own films, showcasing their gratitude for the opportunities he provided.

Some of Corman’s most notable projects include adaptations of Edgar Allan Poe’s works, which featured actors like Jack Nicholson, Boris Karloff, and Peter Lorre. These films received critical acclaim and solidified Corman’s place in cinematic history. Although he later directed projects with larger budgets, Corman found that the interference of major studios negatively impacted their success.

Roger Corman’s legacy lives on through the countless filmmakers and actors he mentored and the influential films he produced. He is survived by his wife and children, and his impact on the film industry will continue to be felt for generations to come. Corman’s work exemplified the creative and experimental spirit of low-budget cinema, and his contributions to the art form will be remembered as part of Hollywood’s rich history.
