Robert F. Kennedy Jr. caused controversy by stating that a potential Trump White House would advise communities to remove fluoride from drinking water, going against decades of public health recommendations. Fluoride is a mineral that helps prevent cavities and is added to water in optimal levels for this purpose. However, there are health risks associated with excess fluoride ingestion, leading some critics like Kennedy to call for an end to water fluoridation. Kennedy claimed that fluoride is an industrial waste linked to various health issues and that the Trumps want to “Make America Healthy Again” by removing fluoride from public water systems.

Fluoride has been added to water since the 1950s to prevent tooth decay, even after fluoride toothpaste became available. While washing teeth with fluoride toothpaste is not harmful, ingesting excess fluoride can have neurotoxic effects. In 2015, officials lowered the recommended levels of fluoride in drinking water due to the rise in fluorosis cases, a condition that causes splotches on teeth. Recent studies have shown a potential link between high fluoride exposure and lower IQ in children, leading a federal judge to order the EPA to regulate fluoride levels more strictly. While the judge acknowledged the risks associated with fluoride, he did not definitively conclude that it is harmful to public health.

Kennedy indicated that Trump had promised him “control” over public health agencies if he were to win the presidency again. He stated that he is ready to help rid these agencies of conflicts and corruption and promote evidence-based science. The World Health Organization has set a safe limit for fluoride in drinking water, and the EPA has strict regulations on fluoride levels in water systems. Trump’s campaign has not made any formal decisions about Cabinet positions, but they have expressed support for working alongside Kennedy to address health issues and investigate the increase in chronic illnesses.

The Trump campaign responded to Kennedy’s statements by saying that while President Trump is focused on the election, he is open to working with passionate individuals like Kennedy to address health issues and improve public health agencies. Trump has also mentioned establishing a Presidential Commission to investigate the rise in chronic illnesses and address health concerns. Kennedy’s criticism of fluoride in water has led to renewed debate on the topic and concerns about his influence on public health policies. Despite the controversy, Kennedy and Trump have expressed a shared goal of improving public health and addressing various health issues in the United States.

Currently, more than 200 million Americans drink fluoridated water, but critics like Kennedy argue that fluoride poses health risks and should be removed from public water supplies. Health officials recommend a specific level of fluoride in water to prevent cavities, and recent studies have shown potential links between fluoride exposure and lower IQ in children. The issue of water fluoridation continues to be a topic of debate, with some calling for stricter regulations and others advocating for its removal from public water systems. Kennedy’s statements have reignited this debate and raised concerns about his proposed role in shaping public health policies under a potential Trump administration.
