According to the IRS, eight tax filing partners, including Tax Slayer and TaxAct, are participating in IRS Free File, with ezTaxReturn.com offering a free tax filing service in Spanish. Some partners also prepare and file state tax returns for free. However, each partner has separate requirements for its free filing services, which may depend on age, income, military status and other eligibility criteria. All IRS Free File partners are offering free tax prep and filing to active-duty military with an adjusted gross income of $84,000 or less for 2024. If you’re preparing taxes with one of the IRS Free File partners, you can file your return early, and it’ll be electronically submitted once the IRS starts processing returns later this month. IRS Free File is a public-private partnership offered by Free File Inc. and the IRS. It processes relatively simple returns, offering answers to basic questions and helping with basic calculations. It’s best suited for people who are familiar with preparing their own taxes.
