Shortly after the incident, police arrested a 17-year-old individual in connection, who was later identified as Axel Muganwa Rudakubana. On Thursday, Rudakubana appeared in court to face murder charges in the death of the three children. The 17-year-old has also been charged with 10 counts of attempted murder and possession of a bladed article, police said. He was remanded in custody.According to the AP, a violent protest broke out following the stabbing in Southport after online misinformation accused Rudakubana of being a Muslim immigrant. The AP later reported of other attacks on immigrants and Muslims in the U.K. that have been attributed to false rumors about Rudakubana.”Dozens of police officers have been hospitalized for injuries in the past six days after being struck with bricks, bottles and large wooden posts,” the AP wrote.”Whatever the apparent motivation, this is not protest. It is pure violence and we will not tolerate attacks on mosques or our Muslim communities,” Starmer said, per the AP. “The full force of the law will be visited on all those who are identified as having taken part in these activities.”The stabbing incident also prompted a response from Taylor Swift, who released a statement the day after the attack in which she said she was “completely in shock.””The horror of yesterday’s attack in Southport is washing over me continuously,” Swift said. “These were just little kids at a dance class. I am at a complete loss for how to ever convey my sympathies to these families.”
