Gavin Newsom said President-elect Donald Trump has ignored his invitation to join him in California amid the wildfires.
Trump has been vocally critical of the California governor, even calling for his resignation over the handling of the fires.
On Friday, Newsom sent a letter to Trump, asking him not to “politicize” the tragedy and to come and “see the devastation firsthand.”
Newsom admitted he was “concerned” Trump will try to cut California’s federal disaster finding when he takes office next week. “We all should be (concerned),” Newsom added. “If past is prologue, so let’s do everything in our power to avoid that. It’s obvious to anyone.”
Trump has blamed Newsom for the latest wildfires, accusing him of prioritizing environmental policies, including protections for the endangered delta smelt fish, over the needs of Californians.
On Truth Social last week, Trump claimed Newsom’s refusal to sign a “water restoration declaration” caused inadequate water supplies for firefighting efforts, labeling the situation “a true disaster.”
Newsom has denied the existence of such a declaration and called Trump’s messaging “delusional” and part of a “consistent mantra from Trump going back years and years, and it’s reinforced over and over within the right wing,” during an appearance on Pod Save America.
Newsom and Trump’s feud seems to go back as least as far as the 2018 Malibu and Paradise wildfires when then-President Trump accused Newsom of failure to carry out proper wildfire-prevention. “You don’t believe in climate change. You are excused from this conversation,” Newsom responded in a post on X.
Their divide may even go deeper than politics; Trump’s eldest son, Trump Jr., dates Newsom’s ex-wife Kimberly Guilfoyle.
Tensions are unlikely to ease any time soon, as Republicans, including Warren Davidson, calling for federal relief to be withheld from California until it changes its forestry management practices.
