What could’ve been a mass casualty shooting when a gunman opened fire at a Texas high school band competition Saturday was quickly thwarted by a brave parent who talked the elderly shooter to the ground, officials said.

The gunman in his 80s shot and wounded one person at the Texas Color Guard Circuit drumline competition at Pasadena Memorial High School before he was taken down, police said.

The man entered the campus and hid behind a pillar inside the school for about two minutes before he shot off a small-caliber firearm, according to cops.

A young adult man was struck before a parent in the audience charged at the shooter, tackling him to the ground.

“Several good Samaritans” then jumped in to help apprehend the man alongside school district officers, according to officials for the district.

“Within 60 seconds a suspect was disarmed and they prevented further shooting by this suspect,” Pasadena police Chief Jerry Wright said at a news conference.

The Pearland Independent School District said in a statement that some of the Samaritans were parents in their district who “bravely intervened, successfully subduing the individual and detaining them until law enforcement arrived.”

The shooting was seemingly done at random and no motive has been determined.

The shooter had no affiliation with the competition, according to the Pasadena Independent School District.

The person injured was a percussion technical consultant for the Angleton Independent School District’s band, the district said. He was struck in the shoulder and taken to a hospital in stable condition, police said.
