Newly released documents reveal that Russia’s proposed agreement to end its “special operation” in Ukraine was actually more of a surrender for Ukraine. The proposal called for Ukraine to give up Crimea and the Donbas region, and also required Kyiv to pledge neutrality, agreeing to never join NATO and reducing its military to just 50,000 soldiers. The proposal also prohibited Ukraine from possessing or developing missiles with a range of 250 km. Despite the failed talks and rejection of Russia’s terms, Russia has been unable to seize any territory from Ukraine since its invasion began in February 2022.

Ukraine’s success in blocking Russian forces from seizing the capital city, pushing them out of key areas, and largely holding the line in the east has been seen as a victory in the West. The U.S. and NATO allies have provided substantial military support to Ukraine, though concerns about Ukrainian manpower remain a key issue in the ongoing conflict. Ukraine has significantly expanded its fighting force, with 900,000 active-duty soldiers and 1.2 million reserve forces, but it still pales in comparison to Russia’s military might.

Despite Russia’s military superiority, it is experiencing high casualties in the ongoing conflict, with reports of 1,200 casualties a day. The war seems to be at a stalemate, with no clear end in sight. There have been suggestions of freezing the fighting along the current battle lines, but Russian President Putin has insisted that Ukraine must agree not to join NATO for the war to end. Ukrainian President Zelenskyy has refused to cede any territory to Russia and has expressed a desire for Crimea to be returned to Ukraine, making joining NATO a top security priority for Kyiv.

Russia’s attempts to end the conflict have largely been unsuccessful, with peace talks failing to produce any meaningful results. The West has supported Ukraine in its resistance against Russian aggression, but has stopped short of sending in international troops. Despite facing setbacks, Ukraine has maintained its resilience and commitment to defending its sovereignty. The ongoing conflict has showcased the challenges of warfare and the toll it takes on both sides, with casualties mounting and no clear resolution in sight. The situation remains complex and fraught with uncertainty, with both sides unwilling to back down from their positions.
