A Louisville Metro Police Department officer, Det. Bryan Gillis, faced corrective action after an internal investigation found that he failed to turn on his body camera during the arrest of two-time PGA major winner, Scottie Scheffler. This incident was not the first time Gillis has been in trouble, as he has been suspended multiple times in the past, including for reckless behavior in his police car and violating the department’s policy on court attendance. Despite his disciplinary record, Gillis has also received numerous commendations during his time with the LMPD.

Surveillance footage of the Scheffler incident showed a different series of events compared to what Gillis had reported in the arrest report. While Gillis claimed that Scheffler had refused to comply and dragged an officer to the ground, the video footage showed a police officer approaching Scheffler’s vehicle and banging on the window before Scheffler was arrested. The discrepancies in the reported events led to Gillis being counseled by his supervisor for not following proper protocols regarding his body camera.

Despite the chaotic situation surrounding his arrest, Scheffler praised the LMPD for their professionalism and stated that he was grateful for having such strong police officers protecting the community. Reports suggested that charges against Scheffler may be dropped, and his arraignment date was delayed to June 3. Scheffler continued with his golfing schedule at the Charles Schwab challenge in Fort Worth, Texas, following the incident.

Efforts to reach Gillis for comment were unsuccessful, and details about the specific corrective action he faced were not disclosed. The incident involving Scheffler highlighted the importance of proper police protocols, including the use of body cameras, to accurately document interactions between officers and civilians. Despite the controversy surrounding his arrest, Scheffler expressed gratitude towards law enforcement officers and the services they provide to the community. The situation serves as a reminder of the complexities involved in law enforcement and the need for accountability in ensuring the safety and well-being of individuals in society.
