President Joe Biden has informed congressional lawmakers of his intention to send Israel a military aid package exceeding $1 billion, including mortar rounds, tank ammunition, and tactical vehicles. This decision comes after the president paused a shipment of bombs to Israel over concerns about the high civilian death toll in Gaza resulting from ongoing attacks. Israel has been attacking Gaza since Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel, resulting in a significant number of casualties on both sides, with international outcry over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and tensions among Democrats over U.S. support for Israel.

Despite criticism and concerns over the administration’s support for Hamas, Biden signed into law $14 billion in Israeli military aid as part of a larger national security package. The withholding of a shipment of bombs has been specifically questioned by Republicans, who claim that the president is favoring Hamas. The proposed aid package for Israel includes tank ammunition, tactical vehicles, and mortar rounds, but it remains unclear whether this transfer is part of a new arms sale or aid package, or if it is part of a previously authorized shipment.

House Majority Whip Tom Emmer criticized the administration for its actions, stating that initiating a new arms sale does not make up for withholding previously approved sales. He emphasized that the administration must be held accountable for its perceived pro-Hamas positions. As the White House has not officially confirmed the reported transfer of weapons, the timeline for when Israel might receive the new weapons remains uncertain. Despite warnings from Biden against attacking the city of Rafah, Israel moved forward with its plans, sending tanks into the city and reaching residential districts.

Newsweek remains dedicated to challenging conventional wisdom and seeking common ground in the search for uncommon knowledge. The ongoing conflict between Israel and Gaza, along with the U.S. support for Israel, continues to be a contentious issue, with conflicting views on the appropriate actions and aid packages to be provided. The situation is complex, with humanitarian concerns being raised alongside political considerations, and the debate is likely to continue as the situation develops.
