Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg expressed that the replacement of the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore Harbor will be a difficult and time-consuming process. The bridge, which was struck by a container ship causing it to collapse, originally took five years to build and opened in 1977. Buttigieg warned that rebuilding the bridge will not be quick, easy, or cheap, citing the complexity of the original structure and the need to assess the condition of its parts. He also mentioned that it is currently unknown when the Port of Baltimore will reopen as the removal of debris from the bridge is necessary before operations can resume.
