A new scandalous period drama called Mary & George is set to air on Starz, starring Julianne Moore and Nicholas Galitzine. The show is based on the real-life affair between King James VI and I and George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham, as detailed in Benjamin Woolley’s novel. The series chronicles how Mary and her son George seduced the King, becoming influential players at the English court.

The British miniseries boasts a 95% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes and was created by Killing Eve’s D.C. Moore, with direction from Oliver Hermanus, Alex Winckler, and Florian Cossen. The cast also includes Tony Curran, Nicola Walker, Niamh Algar, Trine Dyrholm, Sean Gilder, Adrian Rawlins, Mark O’Halloran, and others. Galitzine and Curran were immersed in the story when they first received the script and were fascinated by the scandalous events depicted.

The seven-episode series focuses on themes of sex and social climbing, with Curran teasing that the plot darkens quickly as power corrupts absolutely. New episodes of Mary & George air on Fridays on Starz and are available to stream on the Starz app. The show can also be watched through select live TV streaming services like DIRECTV, Hulu+ Live TV, Sling TV, Philo, and fuboTV, with the option to add Starz to a Hulu subscription for an extra cost of $9.99/month.
