A recent recall of cucumbers shipped to 14 states in May has been issued due to possible salmonella contamination. Fresh Start Produce Sales Inc., based in Florida, initiated the recall after a product sample tested positive for the bacteria. The cucumbers were shipped between May 17 and May 21 to states including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. The cucumbers in question are dark green, approximately 1.5 to 2 inches in diameter, and 5 to 9 inches long.

Fresh Start Produce Sales Inc. has informed customers who purchased the recalled cucumbers directly from the company to remove the product from sale. While the company believes that the contaminated cucumbers are unlikely to still be in the marketplace, consumers are advised to discard any purchased cucumbers or return them to the place of purchase for a refund. The FDA is currently conducting whole genome sequencing to determine if this sample is linked to an ongoing salmonella outbreak investigation.
