Mielle Organics, founded by Monique and Melvin Rodriguez, celebrated its 10th anniversary last year, marking a significant milestone for the Black-owned business. The company was acquired by P&G Beauty in a landmark deal, making Monique the first Black woman to raise a nine-figure investment in a deal with Berkshire Partners. This acquisition was historic, as it demonstrated a shift in the beauty industry and highlighted the success of Black-owned brands.

The journey of Mielle Organics began as a side hustle for Monique and Melvin, emerging from a personal tragedy when they lost a baby to a high-risk pregnancy. Monique, a nurse at the time, found creating hair care products in her kitchen to be a fulfilling and creative outlet. Despite facing skepticism from banks and limited access to venture capital, the couple persevered and grew their brand through social media and grassroots marketing efforts.

Although the P&G deal was celebrated, some loyal Mielle fans expressed concerns about potential changes to the brand’s formulas. Monique and Melvin reassured customers that they continue to oversee the company’s operations, and P&G cannot alter Mielle’s formulas without their approval. This commitment to maintaining the brand’s integrity and authenticity is a testament to the couple’s dedication to their vision and mission.

With a presence in 87 countries, Mielle has expanded its reach and impact over the past decade. Through the P&G partnership, the founders created Mielle Cares, a non-profit organization aimed at giving back to the community. This initiative reflects their desire to empower and support others in the African-American community by providing resources and opportunities for aspiring entrepreneurs.

The Rodriguez’s journey from creating products in their kitchen to striking a deal with a global corporation like P&G is a testament to their resilience and determination. They faced numerous challenges early on, including financial obstacles and marketing setbacks, but continued to push forward with faith and perseverance. By learning from their mistakes and embracing change, they were able to scale their business and achieve success.

As they navigate their partnership with P&G, Monique and Melvin emphasize the importance of setting boundaries between work and personal life. They stress the significance of prioritizing their relationship as husband and wife, ensuring that work does not overshadow their family dynamics. By creating a balance between entrepreneurship and personal life, the couple aims to maintain the magic and passion that drives Mielle Organics forward into the future.
