Former champion Jon Rahm has withdrawn from the upcoming U.S. Open at Pinehurst Resort due to a foot injury that also caused him to miss last week’s LIV Golf event. The world number eight is dealing with a lesion between his toes on his left foot that led to an infection, resulting in swelling and pain. Despite consulting with doctors and his team, Rahm decided it was best for his long-term health to withdraw from the championship.

Arriving at his pre-tournament media availability with a flip-flop on his left foot and a toe separator, Rahm expressed uncertainty about his participation in the U.S. Open. The discomfort in his foot led him to have a shot to numb the area on Saturday during the LIV Golf event, with hopes of playing pain-free. However, Rahm experienced pain after just two holes and ultimately withdrew after six holes.

Rahm’s foot injury has posed challenges for him at recent major events, including a 45th-place finish at this year’s Masters and a missed cut at the PGA Championship last month. Despite his struggles, the Spaniard had finished in the top 10 at three majors last year, including a win at the Masters. Rahm had come joint 10th in the U.S. Open last year and was scheduled to play the first two rounds this week alongside Hideki Matsuyama and Jordan Spieth.

In a statement on social media, Rahm expressed his disappointment at having to withdraw from the U.S. Open and emphasized his hopes of returning to action as soon as possible. The decision to not compete in the championship was made in consideration of his long-term health and well-being. Rahm’s participation in LIV Golf events has also impacted his performance at major tournaments since his move to the organization in December.

Rahm’s decision to withdraw from the U.S. Open came after consulting with medical professionals and his team, taking into account the severity of the foot injury and the potential risks of playing with the condition. The Spaniard’s recent struggles at major events due to the foot issue have led to concerns about his ability to perform at his best, prompting his withdrawal to focus on his recovery and long-term health. Rahm remains hopeful for a swift return to competition once he has fully recovered from the injury.
