Anti-Israel protesters set up a new encampment on UCLA’s campus, leading to a police response in an effort to clear the area. Demonstrators established tents at Dickson Plaza, where a previous encampment had taken place in April and May, resulting in over 200 arrests. Protesters were also seen carrying fake bloody bodies and body parts, honoring Palestinians who died in the war in Gaza.

During the protest, demonstrators prevented people from entering the plaza by standing at the top of the Janss Steps. University police and campus security officers responded to the scene and used bicycles as barriers to prevent more protesters from joining the encampment. Protesters were instructed multiple times to disperse, and the Los Angeles Police Department was eventually called in and declared a tactical alert.

Clashes occurred between protesters and police on campus, resulting in at least one security officer being treated for injuries. Campus police detained the Undergraduate Students Association Council President shortly before 4 p.m., and LAPD reported that 27 protesters were arrested in a confrontation behind Dodd Hall. The protest dispersed around midnight following these incidents.

The ongoing war in the Middle East between Hamas and Israeli forces has sparked protests at various colleges in California and across the country. These protests are calling for an end to all business ties with Israel. The demonstrations come in the wake of heightened tensions following Hamas’ attack against Israel in October, prompting military retaliation.

The situation at UCLA’s campus reflects a broader trend of protests and demonstrations in response to the conflict in the Middle East. As tensions continue to escalate, activists are using their platforms to call for solidarity with Palestinians and to condemn Israel’s actions. The clashes between protesters and authorities highlight the deep divisions and strong emotions surrounding the issue.

The response from law enforcement, including campus police and LAPD, underscores the challenges of managing protests and maintaining public safety in a tense and volatile environment. As the conflict in the Middle East continues to unfold, the tensions are spilling over onto college campuses and sparking activism and calls for action among students and faculty. The aftermath of the protest at UCLA serves as a reminder of the complex and contentious nature of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the broader implications it has on communities worldwide.
