Kevin Adam Kinyanjui Kangethe, a fugitive wanted for allegedly killing his girlfriend Margaret Mbitu, pleaded not guilty to murder charges in a Boston court. Mbitu’s body was found in an SUV at Boston Logan International Airport in October 2023. Kangethe had initially escaped a police station in Kenya after being arrested, but was later apprehended and extradited back to the United States. At the Suffolk Superior Court in Boston, Mbitu’s family and friends expressed hope and a step forward towards justice for their loved one. The family vowed to continue fighting until Kangethe is locked away and cannot harm anyone else.

Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden emphasized that the fight for justice for Mbitu and her family was just beginning. Hayden described Mbitu as a caregiver, a beloved nurse, a beautiful soul, and a loving daughter and sister. Prosecutors revealed new details about Mbitu’s death, stating that Kangethe brutally attacked her in the car with a knife, leaving 10 wounds to her face and neck. Mbitu was found in a parked car at Logan International Airport, with heavily tinted windows to obscure the view inside. Kangethe had abandoned the car and attempted to flee to his home country before authorities discovered Mbitu’s body.

After Mbitu’s murder, a joint American and Kenyan investigation was launched to locate Kangethe. He was initially arrested at a nightclub in Nairobi on Jan. 29, but managed to escape police custody on Feb. 8 by jumping into a privately owned minivan. Eventually, Kangethe was arrested again and remained in Kenya until he was extradited back to the United States. Kangethe is currently being held without bail and is scheduled to appear in court for a pretrial hearing on Nov. 5. The family and friends of Mbitu are hopeful that justice will be served and that Kangethe will face the consequences of his alleged actions.

The brutal murder of Margaret Mbitu and the subsequent arrest of Kevin Adam Kinyanjui Kangethe has sent shockwaves through both the Kenyan and American communities involved. Mbitu’s family and friends have expressed gratitude towards the authorities for their efforts in capturing Kangethe and ensuring he faces justice in a court of law. The tragic loss of Mbitu, a dedicated nurse and beloved daughter, has deeply affected those who knew and loved her. The details of the attack on Mbitu, including the fact that Kangethe allegedly used a knife to inflict multiple wounds on her face and neck, have only added to the horror of the situation.

The timeline of events leading up to Kangethe’s arrest and subsequent extradition back to the U.S. highlights the complex and collaborative nature of international law enforcement efforts. The initial escape of Kangethe from police custody in Kenya, as well as his subsequent re-arrest and extradition, underscore the challenges faced by authorities in apprehending fugitives across borders. The dedication and perseverance of both American and Kenyan law enforcement agencies in bringing Kangethe to justice are commendable, and reflect a commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that those responsible for heinous crimes are held accountable.

As the case against Kangethe moves forward in the U.S. legal system, the family and friends of Margaret Mbitu remain steadfast in their pursuit of justice for their loved one. The tragic circumstances surrounding Mbitu’s death have left a lasting impact on those who knew her, and they are hopeful that the legal process will provide closure and accountability for Kangethe’s alleged actions.
