John Powers Middleton, a film producer and son of Philadelphia Phillies owner John S. Middleton, recently faced backlash due to two Hollywood Hills mansions that were overrun by squatters and taggers. Middleton has since stated that significant progress has been made in the cleanup efforts. He announced that the crews he hired have successfully cleaned up all the graffiti at both of his houses. He also mentioned that he has been coordinating with City Councilmember Raman’s office and other city officials to update them on the progress and ensure the neighborhoods remain safe, with LAPD maintaining a presence to prevent further issues.

Despite the progress made, Middleton expressed concern about the vandalism continuing and the need for accountability for the trespassers and vandals. He emphasized the importance of taking action against these individuals to prevent future incidents. Middleton mentioned that armed security teams have been hired to protect the properties around the clock, acknowledging the challenges posed by crime problems in Los Angeles. LAPD confirmed receiving numerous calls for service related to the properties, including reports of prowler suspects, possible burglary suspects, and vandalism incidents, indicating a persistent issue in the area.

Middleton expressed disappointment over the continued challenges of securing and maintaining the properties. He highlighted the criminal nature of the situation, noting that he is determined to prosecute those responsible to the full extent of the law. Middleton stated his intent to sell the properties as soon as possible once they have been cleaned up and secured. City Councilwoman Nithya Raman confirmed that Middleton’s attorney had reached out to take accountability for the properties and arrange for their cleanup and security. Raman mentioned that the owner had issued an apology to neighbors and hired contractors to repaint the properties, with the work nearing completion.

Raman acknowledged that abandoned buildings are a widespread issue in the city and that the Department of Building and Safety faces challenges in enforcing regulations due to limited resources. She emphasized the need for updated protocols to address the growing problem of abandoned properties in the city effectively. Raman stated that the city has the authority to secure or demolish vacant properties deemed public nuisances and mentioned ongoing efforts to monitor the Hollywood Hills properties and ensure the property owner maintains accountability for securing them. Middleton, known for his work on films like “Oldboy” and “Manchester by the Sea,” remains committed to resolving the issues at his Hollywood Hills mansions and preventing further incidents of squatting and vandalism.
