Arkansas has surprised many by hiring Kentucky’s John Calipari as its new head basketball coach, replacing Eric Musselman who left for USC. The deal is worth nearly $8 million annually and was finalized over the weekend. Now that Arkansas has secured Calipari, attention has turned to who will take over at Kentucky. The Athletic has identified Auburn’s Bruce Pearl as a potential candidate for the job, despite concerns about his past NCAA violations.

Bruce Pearl’s success at Auburn has been impressive, winning the SEC regular season in 2018 and 2022, and the league tournament in 2019 and 2024. He has also led Auburn to its only Final Four appearance. While there may be reservations about his past violations, if other potential candidates turn down the job, Pearl’s accomplishments may make him a more appealing choice for Kentucky’s athletic director, Mitch Barnhart. Pearl’s dynamic personality could also make him a good fit for the Wildcats.

Other names mentioned by The Athletic as possible candidates for the Kentucky job include Baylor’s Scott Drew, Alabama’s Nate Oats, and former Florida head coach Billy Donovan, who is currently coaching the Chicago Bulls. UK Wildcats Wire has also suggested Pearl as a potential candidate due to his recruiting success and competitiveness in the SEC. It remains to be seen who will ultimately be selected to lead the Kentucky basketball program.

Despite concerns about his past NCAA violations, Bruce Pearl’s impressive track record at Auburn makes him a compelling candidate for the Kentucky head coaching position. If other candidates decline the job, Pearl’s success in the SEC and ability to lead teams to deep tournament runs could make him an attractive choice for Mitch Barnhart and the Wildcats. The coaching search at Kentucky continues to generate speculation and interest as fans wait to see who will be selected to follow in John Calipari’s footsteps.
