A recent national poll conducted by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research reveals that the 2024 vice presidential nominees, Democratic Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Republican Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio, are both struggling to gain recognition among the U.S. voting public. The poll shows that about 4 out of 10 Americans do not know enough about Walz to form an opinion, while the same goes for about 3 out of 10 Americans regarding Vance.

Despite the lack of recognition, Walz currently enjoys a higher favorability rating among U.S. adults, with 36% viewing him favorably compared to Vance’s 27%. Vance also faces a higher unfavorability rating, with 44% of those polled holding an unfavorable view compared to Walz’s 25%. However, Vance’s popularity within the Republican Party is on the rise, with his support doubling among Republicans from 3 out of 10 to 6 out of 10.

Recently, the AP-NORC poll found that Walz maintains favorable opinions with 6 out of 10 Democrats, with approximately 3 out of 10 not knowing enough about him to form an opinion. This indicates that both vice presidential nominees have room to improve their visibility and popularity among their respective party bases. The poll was conducted from Aug. 8 to Aug. 12 and surveyed 1,164 adults via the NORC “probability-based AmeriSpeak Panel,” which is designed to be representative of the U.S. population. The margin of error for all respondents is plus or minus 3.8 percentage points.

As the 2024 election approaches, both Walz and Vance are working to increase their visibility and appeal among voters. Recent efforts by both candidates to reach out to voters include visiting battleground states and countering Vice President Kamala Harris and other Democratic figures at events. Vance’s support within the Republican Party has doubled, which can be attributed to a rise in awareness about him and his policies. Meanwhile, Walz continues to maintain favorable opinions with Democrats, although a significant number still do not know enough about him to form an opinion.

Overall, the poll reveals that both Tim Walz and J.D. Vance have work to do in terms of gaining recognition and support among the U.S. voting public. While Walz currently enjoys higher favorability ratings compared to Vance, both candidates have room for improvement in terms of increasing their visibility and appeal among their respective party bases. As the 2024 election draws closer, both candidates will likely continue to focus on reaching out to voters and making their voices heard on key issues that are important to the American people.
