The rate of assaults on U.S. law enforcement officers reached a 10-year high last year, with 79,000 attacks on officers recorded. Sixty officers were killed last year, making it the highest number of officer deaths in a three-year period. Guns were the most commonly used weapons in officer deaths, with 52% of all officers killed in the line of duty dying of gunshot wounds. Last year, more officers were killed in the southern U.S. than any other region, with 20 officers killed. However, an FBI spokesperson noted that the southern region is also the largest region.

Agencies reported that 466 officers were assaulted with guns in 2023, the highest level in a decade, signaling a concerning trend. The release of FBI data on officer deaths and assaults comes during National Police Week, where leaders gathered to honor fallen officers. Former FBI Special Agent Nicole Parker attributes the increase in officer deaths and assaults to growing “legal and social scrutiny” that prevents officers from defending themselves. She stated that officers do not feel they can defend themselves, leading to an increase in violence against law enforcement.

Joe Gamaldi, vice president of the National Fraternal Order of Police, expressed his concern over the rising number of officer shootings, stating that there is a “war on cops” in the country. He highlighted the need for the passage of the ‘Protect and Serve’ act, which would make it a federal crime to knowingly assault a police officer. Gamaldi also emphasized the importance of ambush training for police officers, as there were 115 ambush attacks last year that resulted in 136 police officers being shot.

The increase in assaults on law enforcement officers is believed to be linked to a general demonization and disrespect for law enforcement that has emerged in recent years. Former FBI Special Agent Nicole Parker noted a deterioration of trust and respect for law enforcement, making it easier for individuals to justify assaulting or killing officers. Gamaldi pointed out that politicians, media, and activists have contributed to the disrespect and delegitimization of police officers, ultimately leading to a rise in violence against law enforcement.

The FBI data releases during National Police Week serve as a sobering reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers. The statistics show an alarming increase in assaults on officers, particularly with guns. Both Parker and Gamaldi stress the importance of addressing this trend and taking measures to protect and support law enforcement personnel. Gamaldi emphasized the need to prioritize the safety and well-being of police officers, calling for legislative action and changes in societal attitudes towards law enforcement.

With the number of officer deaths and assaults on the rise, law enforcement agencies and policymakers are being urged to take action to address the underlying causes of violence against officers. The data released by the FBI highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement personnel and the need for greater support and resources to ensure their safety. It is clear that more needs to be done to protect those who put their lives on the line to serve and protect their communities.
