Police divers have found the body of a missing bushwalker in the NSW Southern Highlands after she slipped and fell from a waterfall near Belmore Falls. The woman, aged in her 20s, had been missing since 1pm on Sunday, prompting authorities to conduct a three-day search for her. The falls were closed as police, the State Emergency Service, PolAir, and the TOLL rescue helicopter searched the area.

The search for the missing woman was called off late Sunday due to fading light, but resumed on Monday as fears grew for her safety. The body was discovered around 11.30am on Tuesday and is yet to be formally identified, although police believe it is the missing woman. Belmore Falls, which consists of three drops and plummets 77 to 130 meters, is a popular tourist attraction. In September, a 28-year-old man died after falling from a cliff while abseiling at the falls, prompting a three-hour recovery operation by emergency services.

Following the recent incidents, National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) authorities issued a public plea urging travelers not to attempt hiking to the base of Belmore and Gerringong waterfalls. The area has been the site of several accidents, underscoring the dangers of the rugged terrain and steep cliffs. The tragic death of the bushwalker serves as a reminder of the risks involved in exploring these natural attractions, and the importance of adhering to safety guidelines and warnings.

Authorities have yet to determine the circumstances leading to the woman’s fall, but the incident highlights the need for caution when visiting waterfalls and cliffs. Search and rescue efforts can be challenging in these environments, as demonstrated by the difficult terrain and conditions faced by emergency personnel. The recovery operation to retrieve the body of the missing bushwalker required specialized teams, including police divers and helicopter support, underscoring the complexities of such missions.

As investigations continue and the body is formally identified, the community mourns the loss of the young bushwalker who tragically lost her life while exploring the scenic beauty of Belmore Falls. The incident serves as a somber reminder of the importance of adhering to safety precautions and heeding warnings when engaging in outdoor activities. The NSW Southern Highlands are known for their stunning landscapes and natural attractions, but visitors must exercise caution and respect the environment to prevent accidents and tragedies like this one.

In response to the tragic events at Belmore Falls, authorities may implement additional safety measures and warning signs to prevent future incidents. Education and awareness campaigns could also be launched to inform the public about the risks associated with hiking near waterfalls and cliffs, emphasizing the importance of staying on designated paths and avoiding dangerous areas. The recent accidents serve as a wake-up call for visitors to heed these warnings and take necessary precautions when exploring the breathtaking but potentially treacherous landscapes of the Southern Highlands.
