A wave of robberies in the southern end of New York City’s Central Park has been attributed to migrant individuals as young as 11 years old who are residing in city-run shelters. The NYPD has announced a bolstering of patrols in the park due to this growing issue. Reports suggest that up to 12 migrant boys or young men are linked to around 10 robberies within or near the southern end of the park. Chief of Patrol John Chell stated that this pattern of robberies is believed to involve migrant groups, typically working in groups of eight to twelve or in pairs. The increase in crime within Central Park, with a 200% rise in robberies, a 43% increase in felony assaults, and a 46% uptick in major crimes compared to the same period last year, has raised concerns.
The NYPD has identified approximately 10 robberies that fit the pattern of migrant involvement, most of which occurred within or near the park. As a response, an additional 40 police officers will be deployed daily from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. to patrol Central Park. Drones will also be employed at the end of the month to assist in monitoring the area. Deputy Commissioner of Public Information Tarik Sheppard emphasized that crimes will not be tolerated in Central Park, a renowned location, and that efforts are being made to ensure the park remains safe for everyone. It has been reported that half of the suspects arrested for robberies in the southern end of Central Park this year are migrants, indicating the prevalence of the issue.
In a recent incident, an 11-year-old Venezuelan boy was arrested for using stolen credit cards from the southern end of Central Park. This young boy and a 17-year-old companion were apprehended after allegedly assaulting a passenger on a train in Queens. The stolen phone of the victim was found in possession of the suspects upon arrest near the Roosevelt Hotel migrant shelter in Midtown Manhattan. The victim identified the 11-year-old as the main aggressor in the attack. The increase in reported robberies in Central Park this year, totaling at least 30 compared to 10 during the same period last year, along with an increase in felony assaults, emphasizes the urgent need for enhanced security measures in the area.
