Prime Minister Lawrence Wong is scheduled to visit Vientiane, the capital of Laos, from October 9 to 12 to participate in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summits and related summits. This will be Wong’s first multilateral meeting with other country leaders since taking office in May. Following the conclusion of the summits on Friday, Wong will meet with his Laotian counterpart Sonexay Siphandone, who will host an official dinner in his honor.

As the Minister for Finance, Wong will lead the Singapore delegation to the 44th and 45th ASEAN summits and related summits. The focus of the discussions will be on reviewing the bloc’s community-building efforts and exploring opportunities for people and businesses in new growth areas such as the digital and green economies. The Prime Minister’s Office stated that the leaders will also aim to strengthen ASEAN’s position in establishing an open, inclusive, and stable regional architecture.

The theme of Laos’ chairmanship, ‘Enhancing Connectivity and Resilience,’ highlights ASEAN’s commitment to enhancing unity and resilience in the face of geopolitical and economic challenges. Wong and his counterparts from other ASEAN member countries will discuss ways to expand engagement with various world leaders at the 27th ASEAN Plus Three Summit, the 19th East Asia Summit, and summits with Australia, Canada, China, India, Japan, the Republic of Korea, the United Nations, and the United States. The ASEAN-Japan Summit under Singapore’s coordination will also take place during this visit.
