Paris kicked off the Paralympic Games with a grand opening ceremony following the Olympics. Over 4,000 athletes with impairments will compete in 22 sports until September 8. The event was held in a special setting reflecting on society’s treatment of people with disabilities. Choreographed by Alexander Ekman, the ceremony featured five artistic segments and was centered on the theme “From Discord to Concord: A Reflection on the Place of People with Disabilities in Society.” The ceremony was held on land and without a stadium setting.

The opening ceremony featured a spectacular show with choreographed performances and a flyby by fighter planes painting the French flag’s colors in the sky. Athletes from various nations paraded down the Champs-Élysées avenue in alphabetical order, representing delegations both large and small, including Brazil with over 250 athletes and smaller ones like Barbados and Myanmar with only a few participants. The American delegation, dressed in unique Ralph Lauren-designed outfits, paraded led by flag bearers Nicky Nieves and Steve Serio.

Following the parade, French artist Lucky Love performed a moving piece titled “My Ability” on stage, preceded by a speech by Tony Estanguet, President of the Paris 2024 Organizing Committee, and International Paralympic Committee President Andrew Parsons. Parsons highlighted the Paralympians’ dedication to competition and a message of equality for people with disabilities worldwide. French President Emmanuel Macron officially declared the Paris Paralympic Games open. The opening ceremony aimed to celebrate parity and inclusion and inspire individuals with disabilities worldwide.
