Paul Mescal, the Irish actor best known for his role in the TV series Normal People, is set to star in the upcoming Gladiator II, directed by Ridley Scott and following on from the original Oscar-winning film starring Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix. Mescal will be playing Lucius, the son of Crowe’s Maximus character from the first movie, who is forced into slavery and must fight as a gladiator in the Colosseum in Ancient Rome. Despite the pressure of being compared to Crowe’s iconic performance, Mescal is focused on establishing himself as an actor beyond just this role.

Mescal admitted he did not reach out to Crowe prior to taking on the role, stating that he “wouldn’t know what to say.” He believes that Crowe’s career is much larger than just his role in Gladiator, and that he must focus on his own path as an actor.
