Pedicab drivers in Manhattan have been causing chaos, harassing tourists, engaging in violent behavior, and even sexually assaulting customers. The drivers have become increasingly lawless, engaging in activities such as blasting loud music, charging exorbitant prices, brawling with customers, and attacking competitors. Some drivers have been reported to sexually assault passengers, with one incident involving two women who were groped by a driver who offered them a “free ride” home. These incidents reflect a troubling pattern of mayhem caused by pedicabs in the city.

The behavior of pedicab drivers has led to an increase in criminal summonses, with 1,493 violations issued by the NYPD through June 30, marking a 51.5% spike from the previous year. Consumer complaints have also risen by 56.7%, with drivers engaging in aggressive tactics to target tourists who are looking for a fun experience. Pedicab rides, which are often posted at high prices, have become a popular tourist trap in the city, leading to unsuspecting customers being overcharged for their trips, with fares running as high as $25 a minute.

The lawlessness exhibited by pedicab drivers includes engaging in violent altercations with horse carriage drivers, hurling insults and threats at pedestrians, and spitting in the face of a transgender woman while using derogatory language. A coordinated campaign by pedicabbers to tarnish the reputation of a restaurant based on unfavorable reviews also highlights the aggressive tactics used by drivers to promote their businesses. The drivers, many of whom come from Central Asian nations, employ mob-like tactics to intimidate competitors and control their territory.

The proliferation of counterfeit licenses and registration plates has allowed many pedicab drivers to operate illegally in the city, contributing to the chaotic behavior observed on the streets. Authorities have been urged to crack down on these fraudulent practices and enforce regulations more strictly to curb the rogue behavior of pedicab drivers. While efforts have been made to seize illegal pedicabs and improve oversight and regulation of the industry, some drivers remain defiant and continue to engage in unlawful activities. Despite increased enforcement efforts, the drivers show no signs of complying with the rules.
