ADT is a well-known home security company that has been around for almost 150 years. In order to keep up with modern technology and competitors, ADT has made updates to its systems. In 2020, they started integrating with Google Nest devices, and in April 2021, they began installing and selling Nest products. They have also unveiled a new app in 2023 that allows customers to control all their devices and settings in one place, making it more convenient for users. However, despite these updates, ADT is still seen as too expensive compared to other professional home security systems.

When reviewing ADT’s home security system, the installation process was highlighted as particularly painful. The length of time it took for installation was compared to competitors like Vivint, with ADT taking longer for a similar amount of devices. In addition, the installation process was intrusive, including testing loud alarms at the end that could be disruptive to household members. The system also lacked strong passcode security measures, with installers setting weak passcodes without advising customers to change them.

Once the ADT system is installed, it allows for effective monitoring of the home and offers some smart home functionality. However, there are issues with the control centers – the control panel, app, and online portal. These control centers do not offer all the necessary features in one place, and navigation through the app can be clunky and unintuitive. While the online portal offers more control and customization options, it requires accessing through a web browser which may not be as convenient as using an app for automation.

In terms of pricing and plans, ADT’s monitoring services start at $46 per month, which is higher than some competitors like Vivint. The system also requires contracts that can vary in length, with steep cancellation fees if terminated early. The hardware costs for ADT are also higher compared to DIY alternatives, making it less appealing for customers looking for a professional system without the high costs and contract commitments. Despite offering smart home automation capabilities, the overall value of ADT’s system is considered low due to the high prices and outdated practices.

In conclusion, while ADT has made efforts to adapt to modern technology with Google Nest integrations and a new app, it still falls short in terms of pricing, installation process, and passcode security measures. The system lacks the convenience and affordability that many customers look for in a home security provider. Until ADT improves its sales practices, drops prices, and updates its control interface, it may continue to feel outdated in a fast-moving market. Customers should weigh the pros and cons carefully before deciding to go with ADT for their home security needs.
