Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, who challenged President Alexander Lukashenko for the presidency in 2020, is now fighting for a free Belarus from exile. Tsikhanouskaya has been working to build strong relations with Western political leaders to pave the way for a transition to democracy in Belarus. Despite facing challenges in forming a democracy in exile, she remains steadfast in her commitment to uniting Belarusian democratic forces for the release of political prisoners and the establishment of free and fair elections.

Tsikhanouskaya’s visit to Germany represents a crucial step towards garnering support from other democracies for her cause. She emphasized the importance of international backing in building a democracy in Belarus. While Tsikhanouskaya works to forge connections with European politicians, Lukashenko faces significant sanctions at home. However, more pressure needs to be put on Lukashenko to end his repressive tactics. The recent political prisoner exchange between Russia and Western countries did not result in the release of any Belarusian political prisoners, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

Tsikhanouskaya is adamant that political prisoners should not be used as pawns in negotiations with Lukashenko. She urges democratic partners not to engage in deals with him, as it only perpetuates the suffering of the Belarusian people. Lukashenko’s actions in detaining individuals and playing games with their release demonstrate his lack of humanity. Tsikhanouskaya stresses the need for continued international pressure to hold Lukashenko accountable and secure the release of political prisoners who endure torture and isolation.

Although Lukashenko plans to hold presidential elections in 2025, Tsikhanouskaya believes it is not the right time for the Belarusian opposition to engage in the political process due to the current challenges they face. Despite the oppressive tactics employed by Lukashenko’s regime, she asserts that the majority of Belarusians are against him. Tsikhanouskaya is preparing for a moment of opportunity when the Belarusian people will rise up against Lukashenko. In the meantime, she continues to support the Ukrainian people in their fight against Russian aggression.

Support from countries like Poland has been instrumental in aiding Belarusian and Ukrainian refugees. However, recent changes in asylum policies have raised concerns about the future treatment of Belarusian citizens seeking refuge. Tsikhanouskaya remains grateful for Poland’s support over the years and is determined to understand the implications of the policy changes. Despite the challenges she faces in exile, Tsikhanouskaya’s thoughts are always with Belarus, where she longs for a free and democratic future. Her passion and determination to see Belarus liberated from oppression serve as a driving force in her fight for a better tomorrow.
