Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine was recently taken to hospital after being hit in the leg by a tear-gas canister during a confrontation with police. The mayor of Kampala, Uganda’s capital, stated that Wine had to undergo surgery to remove fragments of the canister but has since been discharged from the hospital and is on the way to recovery. Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, is the leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP) and has faced multiple challenges from President Yoweri Museveni’s government, which has been accused of stifling the opposition and denying rights to opponents.
The incident that led to Wine’s injury occurred when police fired a tear-gas canister at him during a meeting with supporters in Bulindo. Wine’s lawyer, George Musisi, suggested that the police had deliberately targeted Wine, resulting in his injury and the arrests of four party supporters. Wine and his team were reportedly marching down a road when the altercation took place, prompting an investigation by police into the events. The NUP spokesperson, Joel Ssenyonyi, raised concerns about “operatives in civilian clothes” attempting to access Wine’s hospital room and demanding his medical forms, leading to a request for Wine to be discharged from the hospital for his safety.
This incident is not the first time Wine has faced harassment and violence from authorities. In the 2021 election, Wine challenged President Museveni, who has been in power for almost 40 years, and has since been put under house arrest multiple times and had his party rallies disrupted with force.
