The U.S.-Israel alliance is currently strained due to the radical instability of Israel under Prime Minister Netanyahu. His focus on a failed judicial coup instead of pressing issues like dealing with Iran and the Palestinians has divided Israeli society and distracted its military, potentially leading to an attack by Hamas in Gaza. Netanyahu’s shift to the right, combined with a flawed strategy in Gaza and the weakening of important institutions within Israel, is not only detrimental to Israel’s interests but also affects America.

The current situation in Gaza, where Israel is entangled in an ongoing conflict with no clear resolution, is straining American weapon reserves needed by other allies like Ukraine. An endless Gaza war also has the potential to destabilize U.S. allies in the region, such as Jordan and Egypt. Furthermore, the United States is trying to establish a security alliance with Saudi Arabia, contingent on Israel making progress towards a two-state solution with a reformed Palestinian Authority. Netanyahu’s refusal to comply with this condition is jeopardizing the entire deal.

While Hamas poses a threat to Israel, the real existential threat comes from Iran and its network of allies. A recent alliance formed by the United States with moderate Arab states, Britain, and France successfully intercepted a barrage of drones and missiles launched by Iran at Israel. However, Israel’s involvement in Gaza could make it difficult for moderate Arab states, particularly Jordan, to continue supporting Israel against Iran.

The defeat of Hamas would benefit Israel, Palestinians, and the entire Middle East. Partnering with non-Hamas Palestinians to rebuild Gaza and create opportunities for peace is crucial for a new dawn in the region. It may be necessary for Israel to take military action in Rafah to achieve this goal. President Biden should use U.S. leverage to push Israel towards this objective, as Netanyahu does not seem to prioritize it.

Overall, the speech emphasizes the need for Israel to work towards a peaceful resolution with Palestinians and focus on the larger threats posed by Iran. Netanyahu’s actions are seen as detrimental to both Israel and the United States, and there is a call for a more collaborative and forward-thinking approach to addressing the conflicts in the region.
