Olentangy Berlin High School senior Annabella Burton Boone was recently named a 2024 U.S. Presidential Scholar, recognizing her academic achievements. She was one of 161 students nationwide and one of two in Ohio to receive this honor. The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars selects students based on academic success, excellence in the arts and technical education, as well as community service and leadership. Boone expressed a sense of responsibility to make a valuable contribution with this opportunity, mentioning her interests in environmental science, linguistics, and public policy.

Olentangy Berlin Principal Todd Spinner praised Boone as a dedicated and passionate individual who is deserving of this prestigious recognition. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona congratulated Boone and the other winners, stating that they represent the best of the nation’s schools and inspire hope for the country’s future. Boone expressed her excitement at being considered for the award and thanked her family and educators for their support. Chardon Javar Black, Jr. from John Hay High School in Cleveland was the other Ohio recipient of the U.S. Presidential Scholar award.

In addition to student honors, Olentangy Berlin High School English teacher Michelle Mimna was recognized as a 2024 U.S. Presidential Scholars Distinguished Teacher. Mimna was nominated by Boone and is among 161 educators acknowledged for their outstanding impact on the community through ambitious scholarship and student engagement. Boone credited Mimna for helping her see learning in a new light during the pandemic, describing her class as a place where colors became brighter. Principal Spinner commended Mimna as a leader for both staff and students, noting her ability to challenge students to reach their full potential.

Established in 1964, the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program has recognized over 8,200 of the nation’s top-performing students. It was expanded in 1979 to include students with exceptional talent in the arts and in 2015, it was extended to recognize achievements in career and technical education fields. Boone’s achievement as a Presidential Scholar highlights her dedication to academic excellence and her commitment to making a difference in the world. The recognition of Michelle Mimna as a Distinguished Teacher further underscores the positive impact educators can have on their students’ lives and the importance of their role in shaping future leaders. The accomplishments of both Boone and Mimna serve as a reminder of the value of hard work, dedication, and a passion for learning.
