A 13-foot Burmese python named Mango was relocated to a New York zoo after her owner found her growing too quickly for him to care for. The female snake, a rare Albino Burmese python, was surrendered to authorities and is now under the care of Fort Rickey Discovery Zoo in Rome, New York. The snake was confiscated by a New York State Department of Environmental Conservation officer who responded to a complaint about a large snake being illegally kept as a pet. The officer discovered the snake confined to a small enclosure despite its large size and growing weight of 80 lbs. Mango’s owner admitted he was not prepared for how fast the snake was growing and donated her to the zoo.

Mango’s owner was issued citations for illegal pet ownership and for possessing a dangerous animal without a permit. The zoo now plans to enlarge Mango’s habitat to suit her growing needs. Although the owner expressed sadness at having to give up the snake, he is pleased with the zoo’s care for her and plans to visit regularly. Mango is described as docile and affectionate, making her a great animal for educational purposes. The zoo co-owner, Rebecca Stedman, noted that it is crucial for a snake of Mango’s size to have enough space to stretch out properly to avoid respiratory infections.

The Fort Rickey Discovery Zoo is delighted to have Mango join their family of animals, as she is easy to work with and will be beneficial for educational purposes when interacting with visitors, especially children. The snake was described as well-fed and heavier than the average python of her age, indicating good health. The zoo also houses other snakes, including a ball python and two boa constrictors, making Mango a welcome addition to their collection. As long as she is not startled, Mango is generally safe to care for, according to Stedman.

The owner, Mike Stone, expressed gratitude for the zoo’s care of Mango and for providing her with a new home where she can continue to thrive. He described Mango as a beloved pet who will be missed by him and his family, but he is comforted knowing she is in good hands. The zoo’s commitment to expanding her habitat shows their dedication to meeting Mango’s needs as she continues to grow. The attention to her well-being, including ensuring she can stretch out properly and receive the necessary care, reflects the zoo’s commitment to providing a safe and healthy environment for all their animals. Mango’s story highlights the importance of responsible pet ownership and proper knowledge of caring for exotic animals, especially as they grow in size and requirements.
