Residents of the Russian border town of Vovchansk have been on the front line of Ukraine’s war for two years, experiencing cross-border skirmishes and the sound of artillery salvoes as a regular part of life. However, the situation escalated recently when Russian forces launched a renewed ground offensive into Ukraine’s north-east. Many residents, including 51-year-old Olena, were forced to flee their homes after a Russian shell destroyed a neighbor’s home and tore the roof off her own house. The town of 17,000 has seen around 4,000 residents evacuate since the offensive began, with reports of heavy fighting in the suburbs and constant pushes by Russian troops.

The Russian defense ministry claimed that their forces had advanced deeply into the enemy defenses, capturing villages around 15 miles further east of Vovchansk. It is unclear whether the offensive is part of a renewed drive towards Kharkiv, the regional capital, or a distraction exercise to divert Ukrainian troops from the Donbas front line. The residents of Vovchansk have faced occupation and retaking of their town before, and the threat of reoccupation by Russian forces has always loomed. Despite the conflict, some residents have chosen to remain in the town out of patriotism, stubbornness, or lack of alternatives.

Local evacuation teams have been conducting mercy dashes to rescue residents trapped by the recent fighting, braving dangerous conditions with drone and artillery threats. Evacuated residents have been taken to Kharkiv for safety, hoping for some peace amid the chaos. The head of the Vovchansk military administration reported three civilian deaths, at least seven injuries, and one person missing since the offensive started. The pressure on Ukraine has increased with the new Russian offensive, testing the military capabilities and leadership of the new commander-in-chief, Oleksandr Syrsky, who took over earlier this year.

The Kremlin’s push into the north-east region may be aimed at establishing a “grey zone” along the border to prevent Ukrainian incursions into the neighboring Belgorod region. Russian officials reported casualties from a Ukrainian missile strike in Belgorod city, further escalating tensions in the region. Ukrainian troops have expressed concerns about the lack of proper defenses around Vovchansk during the Russian attack, leading to unnecessary casualties. While life remains relatively calm in most of north-east Ukraine, preparations are underway for potential further conflict, with bulldozers digging defensive trenches outside Kharkiv.

The renewed fighting in Vovchansk and the surrounding area has brought a sense of deja vu to the residents, who have endured conflict and occupation before. Many have chosen to stay out of a sense of patriotism or lack of alternatives, despite the dangers they face. Evacuation teams are working tirelessly to rescue trapped residents, navigating dangerous conditions and constant threats from Russian forces. The situation remains tense as Ukrainian forces, led by General Syrsky, seek to push back against the Russian offensive and prevent further losses in the region. The conflict highlights the ongoing challenges faced by residents living on the front line of the war in Ukraine.
