A mother-daughter duo in western North Carolina closed their small business to convert it into a relief center to aid in Hurricane Helene’s aftermath. They transformed their family entertainment center into a supply distribution center where families could receive necessary supplies and hot meals. The goal of Jen Byland and Taylor Lonon remained consistent: to provide hope to those affected by the hurricane for as long as needed. They began by offering assistance to their local community but expanded to help those in other affected areas in Virginia and Tennessee.

The duo, along with a team of volunteers, collected and distributed essential supplies to families impacted by the hurricane. They have received donations from 38 states and have seen a continuous influx of contributions. About 300 to 400 families visit the center each day for supplies or meals, with the total number of individuals helped reaching approximately 4,200 people. Multiple volunteers from various states, including Canada, have come to support the relief efforts, showcasing a strong sense of community support and solidarity in times of crisis.

Jen and Taylor noted the difficulty for rural residents in asking for help, especially prideful individuals like farmers who have faced significant damage to their properties. Despite the emotional challenges, the mother-daughter duo observed how their center provided a sense of relief and hope to those in need. In-demand items included battery-powered heaters, medicine, and rebuilding supplies, such as dehumidifiers and tools. The community’s basic needs for food and water have largely been met, with a list of current needs posted on social media for continued support.

With a focus on maintaining ongoing support for their community and beyond, Jen and Taylor have partnered with a nonprofit for monetary donations to cover expenses. A company has also offered to match donations up to $250,000, ensuring ongoing operations of the relief center. The duo expressed their commitment to staying open as long as needed and serving any community requiring assistance. They plan to establish their own nonprofit called the Hub of Hope and have initiatives in place for Thanksgiving and Christmas projects to provide continued support and hope to those affected by the hurricane.
