The Nigerian Medical Association has reported that 20 medical students from the universities of Jos and Maiduguri were kidnapped while traveling in Benue State. The students were on their way to an annual convention in Enugu when they were abducted on Thursday evening. Among the abducted students were also a doctor who was traveling with them. A ransom demand has been made in exchange for their release, according to the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students.

The Nigerian police and security agencies are currently working to secure the safe return of the kidnapped medical students. In a letter to the inspector general of police, NMA secretary-general Benjamin Egbo expressed deep concern for the safety and well-being of the students. The letter disclosed that 12 of the abducted students were from the University of Jos, while the remaining eight were from the University of Maiduguri. The NMA emphasized the urgency of swift and decisive action to secure the return of the future medical professionals.

The governor of Benue State, Hyacinth Alia, has directed security agencies in the state to intensify efforts to ensure the safe release of the kidnapped students. The national police have ordered the deployment of advanced helicopters, drones, and specialized tactical vehicles to facilitate the search and secure the safe return of the victims. The students were reportedly traveling from the northern part of the country in a convoy of two buses when they were abducted near the town of Otukpo, less than 150km from Enugu.

The increase in cases of kidnapping in Nigeria has been attributed to a severe economic crisis, pushing more people towards committing crimes. Despite a law passed in 2022 banning payments to kidnappers, many families feel compelled to pay the ransoms demanded for their loved ones’ release. Nigerian consultancy firm SBM Intelligence recorded 4,777 cases of kidnapping between May 2023 and January 2024, indicating the prevalence of this crime in the country. The incident involving the abduction of the medical students highlights the ongoing security challenges faced by Nigeria.

Authorities, including the Nigerian Medical Association and the national police, are working tirelessly to secure the safe return of the kidnapped students. The swift action taken by security agencies, as well as the deployment of advanced resources for the search and rescue operation, demonstrates the seriousness of the situation. The safety and well-being of the abducted medical students remain a top priority for all parties involved in the rescue efforts. The incident serves as a reminder of the need for enhanced security measures and proactive strategies to address the rising cases of kidnapping in Nigeria.
