Atolls, tiny low-lying islands in the tropics, have long been seen as vulnerable to disappearing due to rising sea levels caused by global warming. However, recent studies have shown that many of these islands have remained stable or even grown in size over recent decades. Scientists have attributed this phenomenon to the natural processes of currents and waves bringing fresh sand ashore from surrounding coral reefs, as well as the erosion of coral by colorful parrotfish. By studying how these processes affect individual islands, researchers hope to better predict how they will change in the future.

While this research provides hope that atolls may not completely vanish due to rising seas, the threat of global warming does still pose challenges for their inhabitants. Coral reefs, a key source of sand for atolls, are already under severe strain due to climate change. If ice sheets were to melt faster than predicted, sea-level rise could accelerate rapidly. However, researchers emphasize that the ability of atolls to adjust naturally to rising seas presents an opportunity for the people who live on them to find ways to adapt and coexist with their changing environment.

In the Maldives, a country made up of many atolls, there is a need to cultivate and recruit more scientific experts who can help guide the nation’s efforts to adapt to the challenges of global warming. The government’s special envoy for climate change acknowledges the importance of building infrastructure while minimizing harm to reefs and designing resilient towns. However, a lack of access to technology and finance presents a barrier to implementing effective adaptation strategies. Former environment minister Shauna Aminath believes that with the right resources, the Maldives can be saved from the impacts of climate change.

If humans can find ways to thrive on atolls despite the challenges of rising seas, it could provide valuable lessons for adapting to climate change on a global scale. Geographer Jon Barnett emphasizes the importance of solving climate-change adaptation for atolls as a model for addressing similar challenges in other areas. Ultimately, finding ways to coexist with the changing environment on atolls could pave the way for successful adaptation strategies across the planet. The research on atoll islands serves as a reminder that while the impacts of global warming are significant, there are opportunities to find ways to address these challenges and ensure a sustainable future for vulnerable communities.
