The “American Idol” Hollywood Week episode showcased talented singers from New York and New Jersey, including Brooklynite Ajii Hafeez, who impressed judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan. Ajii credits his keyboard teacher at Ditmas Junior High School for inspiring him. Despite his success, Ajii remains humble and focused on his performances. He works the overnight shift at a nursing home and was encouraged to try out for “Idol” by a coworker and patients. Devoted to pursuing music, Ajii’s parents, who are from Pakistan, have always supported him and encouraged him to have fun on and off the stage.

Another talented singer from Clifton, NJ, Hailey Mia Osorio, wowed the judges with her rendition of Katy Perry’s song “Rise.” Hailey is only 16 but has already competed on NBC’s “The Voice” in 2021. Her plans post “Idol” are to continue doing what she loves, making music, and inspiring others. Despite her young age, Hailey has already caught the attention of celebrities like Donnie Wahlberg, who praised her performance. With the support of her teachers and classmates, Hailey is ready to take on the challenges of Hollywood Week and beyond.

Nyachomba Muchai, known as Nya, is a Lower East Sider who boldly describes herself as a “superstar.” Originally from Kenya, she moved to New York City to pursue a career on stage after studying law in Tennessee at her family’s insistence. Nya has made a name for herself in Broadway and off-Broadway productions, despite not having any formal training in singing, dancing, or playing instruments. Although her family was hesitant at first, they are beginning to support Nya’s passion for music, especially after her success on “American Idol.”

These talented singers from New York and New Jersey have unique backgrounds and stories but are all connected by their passion for music and determination to succeed on “American Idol.” Whether they credit a supportive teacher, a coworker’s encouragement, or the influence of their families, they are all driven to make music and inspire others. As they navigate Hollywood Week and beyond, these singers will continue to face challenges and opportunities that will shape their future careers in the music industry. Their experiences on “Idol” serve as a testament to the power of music and the impact that local talents can have on a national stage.
