The Hogmanay celebrations in Edinburgh have been greatly impacted by bad weather, leading to the cancellation of all outdoor events on 30 and 31 December. This decision was made in the interest of public safety due to high winds forecasted as part of a series of low-pressure systems moving across the UK. The cancellations include the street party, the midnight fireworks, and a concert featuring the band Texas. Travellers are being advised to plan ahead and limit journeys, as disruptions are likely on roads and railways due to the challenging weather conditions.

The Met Office has issued amber and yellow weather warnings throughout England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, with snow, strong winds, and heavy rain expected in various parts of the UK. Blizzard-like conditions have already been reported in northern Scotland and the central belt. The cancellation of the candlelit torchlight procession on Sunday was a prelude to the cancellation of other outdoor events in Edinburgh, including the street party and concert in Princes Street Gardens. Ticket holders for the cancelled events will receive instructions on how to claim refunds, while indoor events are still expected to proceed as planned.

There are concerns about gusts of up to 70mph in exposed locations, which could further disrupt New Year’s festivities. Snow accumulation of 10 to 20cm is expected on higher ground in Perthshire, with parts of Northern Ireland, southern Scotland, and northern England also at risk of snow on New Year’s Day. Flood warnings have been issued in England and Scotland, adding to the challenges posed by the severe weather conditions. Travelers are urged to stay informed about the changing forecast and adjust their plans accordingly, especially with the potential for further disruptions.

Advice for traveling in snow and ice includes avoiding travel if possible, waiting until roads have been gritted if driving, and ensuring you are well-prepared with suitable clothing, food, and water. Drivers are advised to drive more carefully in snow and ice, leaving plenty of space between vehicles, slowing down, and using the highest gear to prevent wheel spin. Additionally, drivers should avoid harsh braking and acceleration, and in the event of skidding, gently ease off the accelerator rather than applying the brake. Carrying essential items such as a torch, spade, blanket, food, and water is recommended to ensure preparedness for any unexpected situations on the road.
