The Vessel, a popular landmark in Hudson Yards, will reopen later this year with new safety barriers after a series of suicides forced the tourist attraction to shut down in 2021. The massive spiral staircase in the ritzy development will have cut-resistant “floor-to-ceiling steel mesh” on most levels to withstand outdoor elements. The owner, Related Companies, collaborated with design firm Heatherwick Studio to develop the plan for the safety enhancements while preserving the unique experience for visitors.
The top level of The Vessel will remain closed due to safety concerns, but the first two levels will be fully reopened with new barriers in place. The floors above will only be partially accessible to the public where barriers have been implemented. The steel mesh is designed to withstand damage, including attempts to cut it, and is expected to hold up against harsh weather conditions. An exact reopening date for 2024 has not been announced, but the owner is looking forward to welcoming visitors back to the landmark.
The structure, which opened in March 2019, has been closed since August 2021 after four suicides occurred on the premises. Despite efforts to prevent such tragedies, including a policy requiring at least two guests to visit together, the landmark was temporarily shut down for safety reasons. The deaths included a 14-year-old boy who died in front of his family, a 21-year-old man suspected of fatally stabbing his mother, and a woman who plunged off the side days before Christmas. Measures have been taken to enhance safety and prevent future incidents.
The Related representative said that the policy requiring two guests to visit The Vessel together will no longer be in effect when it reopens, as new safety measures have been put in place. The ticket prices for entry were previously $10, but it is unclear what the cost will be when guests are allowed back.
