A study conducted by the Women’s Sport Foundation has found that girls who participate in supportive sport environments experience lower levels of mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety. The report, titled Thriving Through Sport: The Transformative Impact on Girls’ Mental Health, examined the relationship between sport participation and mental health, focusing on the types of sport environments that have the most significant mental health benefits. This study aimed to provide data-driven insights on how to support girls more holistically in sports settings.

Karen Issokson-Silver, Vice President of Research & Education at the Women’s Sport Foundation, explained that the motivation behind the study came from a lack of previous research and the increasing prevalence of youth mental health issues. The data from the study suggests that engagement in sports within high-quality environments can reduce depression and anxiety, improve peer relationships, and provide a sense of purpose and meaning. The findings underline the importance of sport in improving mental health and highlight the value of creating positive sports experiences for girls.

The study identified several key findings, including lower rates of mental health disorders among girls who play sports compared to those who do not, as well as the impact of different sport settings on mental health outcomes. The report revealed that focusing on effort, improvement, and teamwork in sport settings resulted in lower levels of depression symptoms, while environments emphasizing winning and outperforming others led to higher rates of depression. Overall, girls who participate in sports show higher levels of peer relationships and feelings of meaning and purpose compared to non-sport activities.

Supportive sport environments play a crucial role in fostering positive mental health outcomes for girls. Elements such as autonomy, coach relationships, and a focus on skill development and personal goal setting contribute to a healthier experience for athletes. The study emphasized the importance of promoting a culture in sports that prioritizes well-being and development over a win-at-all-costs mindset, which can have negative effects on mental health and relationships with coaches.

The findings from the study offer insights for policy and practice recommendations in sports programs. The Women’s Sport Foundation advocates for prioritizing player well-being, both physically and mentally, in all sport programs. Initiatives like the Sports 4 Life program, which focuses on increasing the participation and retention of Black, African American, Hispanic, and Native American girls in sports, demonstrate the positive impact of well-executed sports programs on girls’ physical and mental health. Coaches play a crucial role in promoting mental health and confidence in athletes, and training around supporting girls’ mental health is essential.

As women’s sports continue to gain traction and visibility, there is a growing opportunity to expand role modeling opportunities and increase awareness of participation in sports for girls. The surge in viewership and attendance of women’s sports is likely to encourage more girls to participate in various sports, emphasizing the importance of creating inclusive, development-focused, and encouraging environments in sports. The study reinforces the benefits of high-quality sport experiences and calls for organizations and leaders to prioritize supportive environments for girls to fully capitalize on the mental health benefits of sports participation.
