The journey, which revives a five-hour version that was closed down over 30 years ago, offers a budget-friendly option for travelers, with tickets starting at just €8 one way. The route follows a railway line that was originally built over 150 years ago under the Austro-Hungarian empire, making for a scenic and historic experience for passengers.
The train departs from Trieste in northeastern Italy, a picturesque port city known for its waterside palaces and Art Nouveau cafes. After crossing the border into Slovenia, the train makes four stops at Sežana, Divača, Pivka, and Ilirska Bistrica. Visitors can enjoy cycling in Ilirska Bistrica, where e-bikes can be rented to explore the forested tracks surrounded by snow-dusted peaks. The journey continues into Croatia, with stops at Šapjane and Opatija Matulji before reaching its final destination, Rijeka. Alighting at Opatija-Matulji allows passengers to explore the nearby resort of Opatija, known for its rococo villas and grand hotels overlooking the Adriatic Sea.

In the other direction, the train leaves Rijeka at 6.25pm and arrives in Villa Opicina at 8.40pm. Single adult tickets for the entire journey start at €8, making it an affordable option for travelers. Individual tickets for each leg of the journey can also be purchased for those planning to hop on and off at various stops along the route.
