Amazon executive Jon Jones has been named the new vice president and global head of AWS Startups. He previously served as the vice president for GTM (go to market) for AWS Products and Services. Jones joined Amazon in 2017 and has experience in building Google’s first U.S.-based startup accelerator and founding his own startup called Markoza. AWS recently announced a $230 million investment in generative AI startups, including funding for the AWS Generative AI Accelerator, of which Jones spoke at an event in Seattle with AWS CEO Matt Garman and Amazon CEO Andy Jassy.

Videoconferencing giant Zoom has hired Microsoft veteran Michelle Chang as its new CFO. Chang spent over 24 years at Microsoft, most recently serving as CFO and corporate vice president overseeing the Commercial Sales & Partner Organization. Zoom CEO Eric Yuan praised Chang’s leadership and track record in implementing growth initiatives and talent development. Chang will replace Kelly Steckelberg, who is stepping down after seven years at Zoom. She will have the flexibility to work remotely or at Zoom’s offices in Seattle, according to a SEC filing outlining her new role.

The transition for Jon Jones to lead AWS Startups comes after Howard Wright left to join NVIDIA as vice president of the startup ecosystem earlier this year. AWS is making significant investments in startups, particularly in generative AI, as seen with the funding for the AWS Generative AI Accelerator. Jones’ background in building startup accelerators and founding his own startup makes him a suitable candidate for this new role. His involvement in events with top Amazon executives demonstrates his leadership in driving AWS’s startup initiatives.

Michelle Chang’s extensive experience at Microsoft, specifically in overseeing growth initiatives and talent development, makes her a valuable addition to Zoom as their new CFO. Chang’s leadership skills and track record were highlighted by Zoom CEO Eric Yuan, who expressed excitement for her joining the team. The flexibility for Chang to work remotely or at Zoom’s offices in Seattle aligns with the changing work environment due to the pandemic. This move comes as Zoom has begun transitioning employees back to the office two days a week, indicating a hybrid work model.

Overall, both Jon Jones and Michelle Chang bring valuable expertise and experience to their new roles at Amazon and Zoom, respectively. Their leadership and track records in driving growth initiatives, overseeing key functions, and engaging talent make them well-suited for these positions. The investments made by AWS in startups, particularly in generative AI, showcase a commitment to driving innovation and supporting emerging technologies. As the business landscape continues to evolve, having strong leaders like Jones and Chang is essential for navigating challenges and driving success in their respective organizations.
