New Democrats are gathering in Montreal for a three-day caucus retreat to strategize a new path forward that does not involve the Liberals and positions them as a credible alternative to the Conservatives. This retreat comes shortly after NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh ended the supply-and-confidence agreement with the Liberals and aims to prepare the party for the upcoming fall parliamentary session. Singh has positioned himself as the progressive alternative to Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, arguing that the Liberals are too weak to fight for Canadians. Kathleen Monk, a former NDP strategist, believes that being unshackled from the agreement with the Liberals could help New Democrats be considered as a potential government by Canadians.

One of the main objectives of the retreat is to outline the party’s priorities for the fall parliamentary session, which include health care, housing, Indigenous justice, climate crisis, and the conflict in Gaza. The NDP is also focusing on strategizing how to present themselves as capable of defeating the Conservatives. The decision to pull out of the agreement with the Liberals coincides with key votes the NDP hopes to win, such as federal byelections in Winnipeg and Montreal, as well as upcoming provincial elections in B.C., Saskatchewan, and New Brunswick. The move is also aimed at distancing the NDP from the Liberal government in anticipation of the next election.

As the NDP gears up for the return of a traditional minority government, they have stated that they will assess their support for the Liberal government’s agenda on a vote-by-vote basis. The Conservatives have criticized the NDP’s decision to end the agreement with the Liberals, calling it a “stunt” and challenging Singh to trigger an election. It is expected that the Conservatives will bring forward a non-confidence vote in the fall, potentially leading to an election if the majority of MPs support it. The NDP, however, is determined not to be pressured by Conservative tactics and plans to approach each vote independently.

Heather McPherson, an NDP MP, emphasized the importance of presenting a clear agenda and message to dispel the notion that Conservatives are the best option for Canadians to get ahead. The party aims to position themselves as a viable alternative to both the Liberals and the Conservatives. However, Monk believes that Singh needs to improve his communication and presence to make significant gains in the next election. The NDP’s focus is on differentiating themselves from the Liberal government and presenting themselves as a strong contender in the political landscape.

The NDP retreat coincides with the upcoming return to the House of Commons and several key election campaigns across the country. The party is determined to make its mark and present itself as a serious player in Canadian politics. Despite criticism from the Conservatives, the NDP is forging ahead with their new strategy and is committed to making decisions that align with their vision for the future. The retreat provides an opportunity for New Democrats to regroup, refocus, and prepare for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in the political arena.
