The Ukrainian military has reported that Russia is nearing a significant milestone in its losses of armored personnel vehicles in the ongoing war in Ukraine. According to the General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces, Russia has lost a total of 14,913 armored personnel vehicles since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022. Both Russia and Ukraine have suffered substantial losses in terms of personnel and equipment, particularly in recent intensified fighting in Ukraine’s east. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed that Russian losses during the offensive in the Kharkiv region were eight times higher than Ukraine’s, but these figures have not been independently verified.

In addition to armored personnel vehicles, Russia has also lost 1,160 soldiers over the past day, bringing the total to 506,260 casualties. The Russian military has lost significant numbers of tanks, artillery systems, vehicles, aircraft, missiles, and warships throughout the conflict. While Ukraine’s casualty figures are not regularly updated, a leaked U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency assessment estimated that Ukraine had suffered between 124,500 to 131,000 casualties, including thousands killed. Russia rarely shares information on its own casualties, creating uncertainty around the true toll of the war.

On May 24, President Zelensky stated that the Russian offensive in the Kharkiv direction resulted in military casualties of one Ukrainian to eight Russians. Ukraine’s Security Service claimed to have intercepted a phone call between a Russian soldier in the Kharkiv region and his mother, in which the soldier expressed despair over battlefield conditions and lack of supplies. The soldier described a grim situation where they were hiding and experiencing constant attacks by Ukrainian drones, with some soldiers resorting to drinking their own urine due to the lack of water.

The conflict in Ukraine has resulted in significant destruction and loss of life on both sides, with ongoing fighting and casualties reported on a regular basis. While Russia continues to carry out offensive operations in Ukraine, Ukrainian forces have also been able to defend their territory and inflict losses on the invading forces. The war has highlighted the human cost of armed conflict and the struggles faced by soldiers on the front lines, as well as the challenges of verifying information and casualty figures in a complex and volatile environment.

As the conflict continues, efforts are underway to find common ground and resolve the crisis through diplomatic means. News outlets like Newsweek are committed to providing accurate and up-to-date coverage of the Russia-Ukraine war, highlighting the human stories and consequences of the ongoing conflict. The situation in Ukraine remains fluid, with both sides engaging in military operations while also seeking opportunities for peace and negotiations to end the devastating war.
