The Republican Party is in dispute with the US Secret Service and the city of Milwaukee over security concerns at the upcoming convention. The RNC has requested that protesters be moved to a designated area away from convention delegates and attendees, but the Secret Service claims the party is undermining efforts to keep the event safe. The RNC’s lawyer accused the Secret Service of inaction, stating that the security environment around the convention was deteriorating rapidly and demanding that the agency force the city to move the protest zone.

The Secret Service Chief of Communications responded to the RNC’s concerns by expressing confidence in the security plan being developed for the convention. The agency criticized the RNC’s lawyer for sharing details of the security plan, stating that publicly disclosing this information undermines their ability to maintain the integrity of the plan and keep the event, attendees, and the public safe. The Secret Service also emphasized that the host city is responsible for establishing protest zones, not the agency.

The RNC had previously raised concerns about the proximity of protest zones in a letter last month, which have only increased since then according to their lawyer. The RNC has requested meetings with the Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to address their concerns, but have not received responses. Top Republican lawmakers have also reached out to the Secret Service to discuss their concerns regarding security at the convention. The Secret Service, however, stated that they have been engaging with RNC leadership and holding meetings focused on security plans for the convention.

The ongoing dispute between the Republican Party, Secret Service, and the city of Milwaukee highlights the challenges of ensuring security at large-scale events such as political conventions. The differing perspectives on where protesters should be located and how security measures should be implemented can lead to tensions between the parties involved. The resolution of these issues will be crucial in ensuring a safe and successful Republican convention in Milwaukee in July.
