Boar’s Head Provisions Co. expanded a meat recall to include an additional 7 million pounds of product, following a positive test for the listeria outbreak strain in a sampling of liverwurst by the Maryland Department of Health. This led to the recall of meat distributed nationwide between May 10, 2024, and July 29, 2024, under both the Boar’s Head and Old Country branding, with “sell by” dates ranging from July 29, 2024, through October 17, 2024. The products affected include meat intended for slicing and packaged meat and poultry, with distribution to countries such as the Cayman Islands, Panama, the Dominican Republic, and Mexico.

The recall announcement came after investigations revealed that 34 individuals in 13 states had fallen ill due to the listeria outbreak, resulting in 33 hospitalizations and two deaths. Customers who may have purchased the recalled products are advised to contact the Boar’s Head recall hotline at (888) 266-7913 or customer service at 1-800-352-6277 for further assistance. The company recommends that customers either discard or return the affected products for a full refund. Additionally, the USDA FSIS advises deli retailers to discard open cheeses or meats and thoroughly clean and sanitize all surfaces to prevent potential listeria contamination.

Listeriosis is an infection that can result from consuming contaminated foods containing Listeria monocytogenes, leading to symptoms such as headaches, stiff neck, fever, and muscle aches. Due to the serious nature of the illness, customers are urged to take precautionary measures and avoid consuming any potentially contaminated products. Boar’s Head expressed regret for the situation on their company website and empathized with the families affected by the outbreak, expressing deep sympathies for the losses and injuries incurred due to the adulteration of their liverwurst products with Listeria monocytogenes.

As the investigation into the outbreak continues, the USDA FSIS is collaborating with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to track and address the spread of listeriosis. Prompt action is necessary to prevent further illnesses and fatalities, and efforts are being made to trace the origin of the contamination and ensure the safety of consumers. By disclosing the full list of recalled products on their websites and working towards resolving the issue, Boar’s Head and the regulatory agencies are striving to contain the impact of the outbreak and protect public health. Newsweek has reached out to both Boar’s Head Provisions Co. and the CDC for further updates on the situation and any additional reported illnesses related to the recall.
