Microsoft is making an effort to improve the user experience of its AI chatbot, Copilot, by focusing on creating a more personable and supportive “AI companion” for users. The updated Copilot features real-time voice interactions, image and text interpretation, and a warm and encouraging tone that aims to provide not only information but also emotional support and advice. Microsoft believes that this shift towards a more friendly and interactive chatbot will help Copilot stand out among other general-purpose AI chatbots in the market.

The company’s vision for AI goes beyond productivity tools and aims to create a digital friend that can offer assistance, encouragement, and companionship to users in their daily lives. Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman envisions Copilot being present across various devices and platforms, serving as a support system and “hype man” for users. The goal is for Copilot to become a trusted companion that can provide assistance, reminders, and even emotional support as users navigate their everyday challenges.

To address concerns about forming emotional attachments with AI chatbots, Microsoft has assembled a team of non-technical specialists to interact with Copilot and provide feedback on its responses. The team includes creative directors, psychologists, and language specialists who help shape the chatbot’s personality and ensure that it maintains a friendly and conversational tone. Microsoft is also taking steps to avoid creating chatbots that resemble or imitate real-world figures to maintain a clear boundary between AI and human interactions.

In addition to the voice feature, Copilot now includes a daily feature that reads users the weather and provides news updates, as well as integrations with Microsoft Edge browser for quick access to the tool. Power users can experiment with new features in development through Copilot Labs, including “Think Deeper” for complex questions and “Copilot Vision” for screen interpretation and next step suggestions. Microsoft emphasizes privacy and security in its AI tools, ensuring that Copilot Vision sessions are opt-in and that no user content is stored or used for training purposes.

Overall, Microsoft’s efforts to enhance Copilot’s personality and functionality reflect a broader shift towards developing AI as more than just a productivity tool. By focusing on creating a friendly and supportive AI companion, Microsoft aims to build trust with users and integrate AI seamlessly into their everyday lives. As AI technology continues to evolve, the role of chatbots like Copilot may become more prominent in providing assistance, companionship, and support to users in various aspects of their lives.
