Johnny and his brother, Matthew Gaudreau, both lost their lives tragically in a biking accident in New Jersey on August 29. The siblings, who were in town to celebrate their sister Katie’s wedding, were struck by a car while biking in Oldmans Township. Johnny, aged 31, and Matthew, aged 29, were set to be groomsmen at the wedding later that week in Philadelphia. The Gaudreau family, including parents Guy and Jane, were left devastated by the sudden loss of both sons. The driver of the car, Sean M. Higgins, was arrested and charged with two counts of vehicular homicide, as he was suspected of driving drunk at the time of the collision.

Johnny Gaudreau was a prominent NHL star, known for his career with the Calgary Flames before signing with the Columbus Blue Jackets in July 2022. He played as a left-wing player for two seasons with the Blue Jackets before his untimely passing. Matthew Gaudreau, also a talented hockey player, spent seven years in the minor leagues after playing for Boston College. Before his death, Matthew served as the head hockey coach at Gloucester Catholic High School in New Jersey, where he and Johnny had played in their teenage years. Matthew leaves behind his wife, Madeline Gaudreau, who was pregnant with the couple’s first child at the time of the accident.
