Mercury retrograde, known for causing communication mishaps and confusion, does not end immediately once the planet stations direct. The effects can still be felt for up to two weeks afterwards, a period known as the shadow period or retroshade. During this time, the energy is still off-kilter and emotionally congested, offering lessons in preparation and integration before returning to normalcy.

The pre- and post-retrograde shadow periods refer to the two weeks leading up to the transit and the two weeks afterwards. In this latest round, Mercury’s retroshade will begin on August 28 and extend through September 11. This period can bring chaos and confusion, as well as opportunities for review and clarity as we navigate the effects of Mercury retrograde.

Mercury retrograde occurs three to four times a year, with each retrograde period lasting about three weeks. When factoring in the shadow periods, we can spend up to six months a year under the influence of Mercury’s slow-down effects. The pre-shadow phase begins when Mercury crosses the zodiac degree it will eventually station directly on, leading to the chaotic storm period before the planet turns retrograde.

During the official retrograde period, which lasts about three weeks, frustrations, delays, and obstacles are common as we are forced to slow down and review our actions and decisions. After Mercury turns direct and experiences the second storm, the post-shadow phase or retroshade begins. This phase allows for clarity and resolution of issues that may have arisen during the retrograde period.

Many astrologers see Mercury retrograde as a three-part series, with the pre-shadow setting the stage, the retrograde bringing chaos, and the post-shadow providing a chance to tidy up and bring closure to lingering issues. The retroshade can offer clarity and finality to situations that may have been confusing or overwhelming during the retrograde period, pushing us towards personal evolution.

The next Mercury retrograde is scheduled to take place in the sign of Sagittarius from November 25 to December 15. The pre-retrograde/retroshade period will extend from November 7 to 25, and the post-retrograde period will last from December 15 to January 2. This upcoming retrograde period may disrupt holiday plans and bring unexpected challenges, so it is important to stay aware and prepared.
